Nota fiscal
and invoice issuing in Brazil

Understand when to issue a nota fiscal, which systems to use and why municipal or state registrations may be needed.

What to do, step by step

  1. Identify whether the transaction is a service, sale of goods or another taxable activity.

  2. Confirm the required document: municipal NFS-e, state NF-e or another tax document.

  3. Register with the prefeitura or Sefaz system and obtain a digital certificate when required.

  4. Fill in customer data, description, value and taxes based on official rules.

  5. Keep issued invoices and cancellation or correction records for the applicable period.

Frequently asked questions

Does a MEI need to issue a nota fiscal?

For corporate clients, usually yes; for individual consumers, it may depend on the rule. Check Portal do Empreendedor and the prefeitura.

Is nota fiscal the same as a receipt?

No. A nota fiscal is an official tax document. Receipts may prove payment, but they do not replace a required nota fiscal.

Which system should I use?

Services usually use the prefeitura system; goods use Sefaz systems. The rule depends on the activity, location and transaction type.
