Ask Graded School, in writing, for the cost worksheet and an explanation of the increase or fee charged.
-
Check whether the amount was published in advance (at least 45 days before the enrollment deadline) and whether increases happen once a year.

Frequently asked questions
Can the school or college raise tuition during the year?
As a rule, no. Law 9.870/1999 provides for the amount set in the contract and its review per school term, based on a cost worksheet. Increases outside those rules can be challenged.
Can they charge a separate fee for shared materials or enrollment?
Amounts charged at enrollment are part of the annual or semester fee, and charging for shared-use materials is prohibited (Law 9.870/1999, as amended by Law 12.886/2013). Each case should be reviewed with the contract at hand.
Must the institution publish the price before enrollment?
Yes. The contract text, the annual or semester fee and the number of places must be published in an easily accessible place at least 45 days before the enrollment deadline.
How long do I have to request a refund of amounts overcharged?
The general period is up to 5 years, but it is better to act soon and gather the contract, payment slips and receipts to make the review easier.
